Patient-oriented cancer research and sustainable cancer prevention
The DKFZ Hector Cancer Institute at the University Medicine Mannheim (UMM) was established in 2019 in the frame of a partnership between the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, the University Medical Center Mannheim, and the Medical Faculty Mannheim of Heidelberg University with generous support from the Hector Foundation II to make internationally visible contributions to patient-oriented translational cancer research in Mannheim in the long term, optimally dovetailed with patient care through innovations and new study offerings at a high academic level.
After a successful founding phase, the Hector Foundation II expanded their funding support in 2022 and will finance the institute with a total of 78.5 million euros over the next ten years. The increase will enable an expansion of the research spectrum beyond the initial topics into the areas of cancer prevention and cancer survivorship.
The DKFZ Hector Cancer Institute at the University Medicine Mannheim (UMM) is supported by the DKFZ, which offers an excellent scientific environment for conducting cancer research at an internationally competitive level. As a university medical site, the UMM, the association of the University Medical Center Mannheim with the Medical Faculty Mannheim of Heidelberg University, offers multidisciplinary, oncological patient care, research and teaching of high quality.
